Established by The Share Centre in 2003 and endorsed by the Personal Finance Education Group (pfeg), Shares4Schools is a unique competition that brings economics and business studies to life as teams of students invest real money in the stock market.
The competition is open to Year 12 students, or Secondary 5 in Scotland. While it's normally business studies or economics students that take part, the competition is aimed at all students who have an interest in learning about the stock market.
Each team must raise an investment pot of £1,500 to invest in the stock market, with the aim of achieving the greatest profit over the period October to June. Schools are encouraged to raise the initial investment through sponsorship from local businesses and The Share Centre.
At the end of the competition, the shares are sold and the team with the most money is declared the overall winner. The national winner and four regional winners are invited to attend a special award ceremony in London and schools can keep any profits made from the competition to use at their discretion.
